Amethyst is the undisputed home of card advantage in Disney Lorcana. While Steel leans on raw damage and Ruby on destruction, Amethyst wins through incremental value — squeezing more use out of its cards than the opponent thought possible, and burying them in options.
The "Amethyst problem" for budget players is the price tag on its Legendary staples. It's easy to feel locked out if you don't have a fortune to spend on a chase playset. But that's exactly where the math saves you: the engine that makes Amethyst tick isn't its Legendaries — it's the common and uncommon "bounce" package that lets you reuse abilities, rescue characters, and out-draw your opponent for a few dollars.
Below are the best Amethyst staples under $10, organized by role: core draw, the bounce engine, early-game lore pressure, and mid-game utility. Every card is verified against its current printing, and pricing stays qualitative because the market shifts constantly.
The Short Version
Amethyst's budget core is draw plus bounce. Friends on the Other Side (draw 2), Maleficent - Sorceress, and Merlin - Rabbit keep your hand full; the two Madam Mim forms (Fox and Snake) return your own characters to hand to re-trigger their effects — looping Rabbit for cards or Merlin - Goat for lore. Round it out with cheap early questers (Maleficent - Biding Her Time, Chernabog's Followers, Pascal - Rapunzel's Companion) and utility (The Queen's Castle, Rafiki - Mystical Fighter, Befuddle). None of it needs a big budget.
Start Here: Your First Three Buys
New to Amethyst and not sure where to spend first? These three cheap cards cover the color's three pillars — card draw, bounce, and early pressure — and give you a functional core to build around.
- Friends on the Other Side — your draw. Two cards for three ink, the signature Amethyst refuel.
- Madam Mim - Fox — your engine. Rush plus a bounce that re-triggers your enter-play abilities.
- Maleficent - Biding Her Time — your pressure. A 1-cost that quests for 2 and starts the race.

Core Draw Engines
Card advantage is the metric that wins Lorcana games: more cards means more answers. Amethyst is the best in the game at it, and its cheapest draw is some of its best.
Friends on the Other Side
3-cost Amethyst Action · Song
The gold standard for draw efficiency: 3 ink to draw two cards. And because it's a Song, you can exert a character costing 3 or more to play it for free, refilling your hand without spending ink for the turn. In a budget build it's often more valuable than a Legendary, because it's what actually finds the pieces of your win condition. A mandatory four-of in any Amethyst deck.
Maleficent - Sorceress
3-cost Amethyst Character · 2 Strength / 2 Willpower / 1 Lore
Sometimes the simplest card is the best. For 3 ink she enters and draws you a card, leaving a body to sing or quest while keeping your hand size neutral. A perfect early-game setup piece that keeps you from stalling while you wait for your bigger threats.
Merlin - Rabbit
4-cost Amethyst Character · 2 Strength / 3 Willpower / 1 Lore
A value engine. "Hoppity Hip!" draws you a card when you play him and when he leaves play — so whether he's banished in a challenge or returned to your hand by a bounce effect, he's already replaced himself. He's the prime target for every bounce spell in your deck.
The Bounce Engine
"Bounce" means returning your own characters from the board to your hand. In most games that's a setback; in Amethyst it's a superpower — you rescue an exerted character from a challenge, and you re-trigger its "when you play" effect all over again. These three are the heart of the engine.
Madam Mim - Fox
3-cost Amethyst Character · 4 Strength / 3 Willpower / 1 Lore
The most versatile card in the ink. She has Rush (she can challenge the turn she's played), and when you play her you banish her or return another chosen character to your hand. Scoop up a damaged Merlin - Rabbit to draw a card, then swing the 4-strength Fox into an opposing character. Tempo, protection, and card advantage in one play.
Madam Mim - Snake
2-cost Amethyst Character · 3 Strength / 3 Willpower / 1 Lore
The cheaper bounce body. She lacks Rush, but a 3/3 for 2 ink is hard for early questers to get through, and her bounce works exactly like the Fox's. The ideal turn-two follow-up: quest with a 1-drop, bounce it back to safety with the Snake, and leave a sturdy blocker behind.
Merlin - Goat
4-cost Amethyst Character · 4 Strength / 3 Willpower / 1 Lore
If Rabbit is the draw engine, Goat is the lore engine. "Here I Come!" gains you 1 Lore when you play him and another when he leaves play. Loop him with the Madam Mim bounce cards and you generate lore every turn without ever risking him in a quest — the kind of slow inevitability that wins the race to 20.
Early-Game Lore Pressure
The best way to beat an expensive deck is to win before it gets going. Amethyst has some of the most efficient cheap questers in the game to do exactly that.
Maleficent - Biding Her Time
1-cost Amethyst Character · 1 Strength / 1 Willpower / 2 Lore
The premier aggressive 1-drop: for a single ink she quests for 2 Lore. Drop her turn one and, left unanswered, she racks up lore fast. She's fragile, but the pressure she applies for such a low cost is enormous — a staple of Amethyst aggro.
Chernabog's Followers - Creatures of Evil
1-cost Amethyst Character · 2 Strength / 1 Willpower / 1 Lore
A 1-drop that never goes dead. "Restless Souls" lets you banish it whenever it quests to draw a card — so it chips in early lore, and once your opponent has a favorable trade lined up, you simply quest, banish it yourself, and draw. Lore pressure that converts into a card later.
Pascal - Rapunzel's Companion
1-cost Amethyst Character
The king of stealth. "Camouflage" gives Pascal Evasive as long as you have another character in play — and since most decks run few Evasive units early, he quests turn after turn untouched. The perfect partner to your aggressive 1-drops: they bring the big lore, Pascal brings the safe, consistent lore.
Mid-Game Utility
Amethyst isn't a hard-removal color (that's Ruby's job) — it disrupts and out-values. These three handle the mid-game without a Legendary price tag.
The Queen's Castle - Mirror Chamber
4-cost Amethyst Location
One of the best budget Locations in the game. "Using the Mirror" lets you draw a card at the start of your turn for each character you have at the Castle. It forces a lose-lose on your opponent: spend attacks tearing down a high-willpower Location, or let you quietly draw your deck while questing. Card advantage that sits on the board.
Rafiki - Mystical Fighter
1-cost Amethyst Character · 0 Strength / 2 Willpower / 1 Lore
A cheap trade-up tool. Rafiki has Challenger +3 — while challenging, he gets +3 Strength — so this 1-cost body swings as a 3-strength attacker into an exerted threat, banishing characters far above his cost. He's also a fine bounce target to reuse later. (Note: he challenges as normal, so he needs to be ready — he isn't a turn-one surprise attacker.)
Befuddle
1-cost Amethyst Action
A one-ink bounce trick: return a chosen character with cost 2 or less to its owner's hand. Use it offensively to set an opponent's key 2-drop back a full turn, or defensively as a rip-cord to save your own damaged Madam Mim - Snake before it's banished.

The Verdict
Where to Buy Amethyst Singles
Build your bounce engine a card at a time on the singles market — far cheaper than chasing them in packs. Compare condition and the live price before you buy.
Build the Engine, Not the Binder.
Amethyst proves that efficiency outpaces raw spend. You don't need a stack of Legendaries to dictate a Lorcana match — you need a low curve, a couple of draw engines, and the bounce package that lets you reuse them over and over. Keep your questers cheap, protect Merlin - Rabbit with your Madam Mims, and out-card your opponent until the game is simply out of reach.
Keep Building:
